It's a cute book, but the pieces needed are kind of specific. You need ears and horns. The directions are also a little difficult. The difference between each step is 2-5 pieces and it only shows one angle. For example the horse was all black and it was really difficult to see the individual pieces and where they were added to the animal on each step. My 4.5 year old who does just fine with regular lego directions couldn't pick out what new pieces had been added and our 7 year old struggled with it, but could manage with a lot of assistance. We have 2 creator cubes and 2 long rectangular bins of legos and we don't have enough of a collection of pieces to make any of the animals, even if we don't follow the color pattern.

I really like this book and I think the author is artistic and has good taste. The animals are all really cool. So here is the positive: You can really learn from this book, and I think for that reason it is best suited for an adult who wants to learn to build, or for an advanced child. The reason that this book must really be relegated to the nerdy and the driven to learn type of crowd is because you are not given any information about the exact bricks. You must look at a diagram of the brick shapes, which tells you only how many you need. But it doesn't specify the exact brick numbers. On the "pick a brick" web page for the "Lego Shop" (online store), you can only locate bricks easily by knowing the "Element ID" number or else the "Design ID" number. The Element ID identifies the specific brick AND color you are wanting. But if you want to see all colors of that particular brick shape, you may rather type in the Design ID, to see all the options for color in that shape. What makes this a fantastic learning experience, if you are willing to put in the time, is that using this book, you look at his illustration of the particular brick he wants you to use, and then you must figure out, by looking at all the likely suspects on the Lego Shop online. If you are lucky and this brick is still being made or is being "made available" by the Lego powers that be, you can order it for between $0.07 to perhaps $0.15. I think I have spent three hours researching which bricks are needed for the black cat alone! I am so determined to make the black cat! A further complication is that not all the colors are available in a particular brick, so for the nose of the cat... I can't even tell if the author intended us to use bright pink (solid) or red translucent. The lego store only has red translucent right now, and they seem to have a total aversion to bright pink square tile 1x1! I couldn't find a pink circle tile in 1x1 either, unless I am willing to shop on the sorta ebay for brickaholics, "bricklink"... but that means shopping with strangers and I'm a rather fearful type. So I think I may end up making the cat wear a translucent red nose. The feet are impossible to find as they have not been made since 1996, I think. I would have to shop for those on bricklink, and I might just break down and do that since those are super cute feet to use on any animal builds.As you can guess, I enjoy mentally tortuous experiences for learning. I think this will actually teach me more, by forcing me to pay attention to bricks and make an effort looking them up... pricing them, possibly taking a foray into bricklink commerce.This sounds like a negative review, but I mean it as an encouragment for people who are highly motivated to learn and work on some small builds that appear to have interesting choices and techniques. I think this guy is really skilled and creative, and so the book was what I was looking for. He's kind of like a zen master with a stick though. And he won't tell us the element ID number of his stick either!I was looking online for more ideas on how to learn to build and I found the most amazing thing: Lego academy type thing called "buildwithchrome". And I realized that the purchase of a large amount of red translucent flat tiles 1x1 would be the bomb, as it looks amazing used to add decorative elements to towers. There's an amazing futuristic build of black towers with the little translucent red tiles in it. Go check it out. And buy this book if you want to put in the time and effort. So having to buy this brick for the nose on a black cat by Warren Elsmore is actually a bit of a holy grail. I am not leery of this expense and effort anymore.4 stars only because it would have been preferable had the author provided us the brick element ID at the very least!

I had high hopes for this book. Despite several reviews complaining that the projects required too many pieces, many of them obscure, I thought for sure that we would have enough legos. My oldest is 15 which means that we have been collecting legos for 10 yrs, including several "classic" boxes and countless sets. We couldn't come close to putting these projects together, not one. If you are able to gather the necessary pieces you will have trouble following the step by step photos.....when working w/ one color its difficult to see the added pieces from one step to the next. Very disappointed.

We have many Lego pieces (boxes of them!) but these animals require more specialized, new pieces that we don't have! Kind of a bust! Wish I'd never ordered this book.

My 4 year old loves this book! It's a fun book for him to just look at the pictures, and it's also a great book to give you ideas to make some fun little Lego animals. Sure, you might not have all the exact pieces that the instructions call for, but the instructions will help steer you in the right direction to come up with some creative stuff. I would highly recommend this book for you if your kids are into Legos.

I bought this for my grandson who is almost six and just started getting interested in Lego's. The directions are going to be too old for a six year old, but with an adults help this is a great book. Fast shipping.

I so agree with others that one shouldn’t give a 5 Star review after just looking at the book! Directions are difficult, pictures not complete, and nobody- I mean nobody- will be able to find the pieces to build these. The Lego people must shudder to see what this author did to their great product

Did not like. Too many special shaped bricks required. Wanted something simple that my granddaughter could build with simple bricks.
