I loved the book. In spite of a lot of details, it wasn't dry reading and gave me a whole new perspective on our early colonial history. I had read a bit about the Palatine migration, mostly to Pennsylvania, but understood it so much better after reading about those war-weary and dissimilar bands of tribes and what they endured getting to New York, how they overwhelmed the British social system that initially sympathized and wanted to help them, and how they learned to co-exist and flourish with people of different ethnicity, religions and languages. It's sad that even my college US History book omitted such an influential group of immigrants. What a missed opportunity for classroom discussions.If today's social, racial, refugee and immigration challenges are of interest to you, read this book.

Very clearly written explanation of data teased out of the research Hank Jones did on thePalatines and their settlements in the Colonies. Very useful overview. I even read the bibliography and the footnotes.

Nice compilation of existing materials (and some new to me) in a somewhat orderly fashion. Having researched my 1710 New York palatine roots while doing my family genealogy, much of this book was familiar to me. Overall, I enjoyed it.

This is an ongoing review. So far this has been a marvelous overview of the Palatine migration to New York State. About 20 years ago I made a short visit to the Palatine village in Germany where my Palatine ancestor lived before coming to colonial New York. It describes not only the situation in the Palatine but all of the history including English history and politics of the time. The migration was full of delays and detours.

So many things I needed to know about my family and German heritage. Insightful. Looking forward to visiting the Schoharie soon.

This book was helpful in understanding the reasons for the migration and what happened to the families. It helped me piece together some family records. I enjoyed it.

The book has given me some new insight into the time period after my ancestors arrived in New York and what life was like for them. There are also many footnotes pointing to where I can find more information for further research!

I have been searching all over the web for English information about the original immigrants from the German areas of Europe. This book certainly opened up a treasure of information on the mindset of these people and their determination to achieve their goal. I found this book VERY readable and appreciated the emotional aspects of this time and people as well. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has even a casual interest in history. It is EXCELLENT!
