Anna has such a friendly, warm writing tone. She is knowledgeable in off grid living, but many of the projects she outlines in this book can be done by city dwellers who don't necessarily want to pull the plug completely, but rather want to start a journey toward more self sufficiency. I have read a few of Anna's books and have always learned something new. This particular book is one of my go-to references for weekend projects that are not too difficult or expensive, but will help my family and me grow our own food.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought about becoming more self-sufficient- not only as a homesteader, but also as an individual striving to build & understand one's own identity. Anna has captured the essence of all the labors and bountiful pleasures of having done it yourself. Her book not only is a how to, but a WHY to. It is thought provoking and may have you asking yourself why not? A "guide" book does not figure to be one that will be hard to put down, but I found it to be so engaging, laden with beautiful photography of her adventures and nature. And finally, now that I have read it -I find it is a must have reference for my library!

Information to get you started with gardening and keeping chickens if you have a full time job during the week. Yes, there are things that have to be done everyday, but you don't have to get bogged down in details. If you are retiring to do this full time, you can probably find a better book for yourself, but this is a great basics book.

I've been reading the author's blog and buying (and using) her e-books for more than a year. I'm so glad to have all this knowledge compiled and printed and in my hands!Hess's book is comprehensive, helpful and inspiring, whether you're moving toward complete self-sufficiency or just want to improve and increase your tomato yield. Organized by month, each section contains season-appropriate projects, most of which can be accomplished in a weekend. I've adopted many of her methods, the most successful of which (for my purposes) has been the kill mulch. Faced with a very weedy asparagus bed and no idea what to do with it, her plan for smothering weeds with cardboard and compost worked like a charm.I've since gone on to expand my gardens from a small vegetable plot to a much larger one, with the addition of a separate herb bed, some blackberry bushes, three apple trees and a very large landscaped flower bed. Her techniques have been invaluable - and I've limited my use of them mainly to gardening.I highly recommend this book, and hope you enjoy Hess's writing as much as I have.

I love this book. I am not following the suggested timeline, just reading the section on each subject as I need it, which works out great for me. It's like a beginner's guide for almost everything I need, all in one place - and in manageable chunks.

This book is great. It has a monthly breakdown that you can follow from the beginning or just do the projects as you want. I like the in depth instructions and descriptions given. Perfect for the beginners. Starts with the very basics and then goes to more complicated projects.

I started reading these monthly installments until I heard it was coming out in a complete book form. I love how I can pick and choose amongst these activities finding things that I've already done (yay me!) and activities I can choose to do this year. Each activity is concise and honest. I like how they are clear, show the benefits, have a time-frame, and even list how kid-compatible they are.I read through this making notes, and opening my mind up for larger dreams. This book, as the smaller installments excite me, but I like skipping around this larger book much better than between several little booklets.

I became a home owner last year and am planning on turning 1/3 of our yard into veg gardens and a chicken coop. This book was written for folks like me. The photos are helpful and the tips are great. It’s helping bring a bit of order to the chaos that can be transitioning from lawn to urban homestead.
