The modern story switches to the pioneers to fictional reference articles and back. I think I was halfway through the book before I fully understood the canter of the book. Maybe the lack of rhythm was part of the intrigue and meant to add to the feeling of being unsettled. Either way, between this confusion and the Harriet Beecher Stowe style wordiness of the 1800 story, I almost put it down. However, I was compelled on by the who-done-it style of the modern chapters and the heart of its protagonist.Because it matters to me and it may matter to other readers, there were more f-bombs than I was comfortable with. The main character is a single gay man that becomes involved in a relationship. Knowing the mind of someone that has same-sex attraction is not comfortable for all readers. This is included as a statement of fact, not judgement. I'm not mormon and I didn't find this book to be overly religious, nor overly critical of that religion... however, the mormon may feel differently. It was not written as an exposé but did give credence to how polygamy and the abandoning of that doctrine has shaped the LSD church today.Lastly, I selected this book because I was visiting SLC and Moab at the time and wanted something that spoke specifically to its history. Visiting the Beehive and Lion house and watching the sun change the color of the desert brought this story alive.

I found this book fascinating I was introduced to a way of life I knew little about and thoroughly enjoyed learning about it. The book was an interesting g mix of news accounts, writings from various sources, and story telling by and about various characters and during different time periods. . Although sometimes it "jumped around" a bit too much for my taste, so I sometimes was not sure where I was. Sometimes I had to stop and re-read a page or so to get my bearings. But despite this, I found it very interesting and fairly well done. I learned so much about the early Morman church, polygamy, and so many of effects this had on the teachings, church policy, as well as church members. So nice when a book reads well and you learn a lot at the same time!t

Anyone at all interested in the Mormon faith, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will find this novel fascinating. Author Ebershoff has focused on the issue of polygamy, or plural marriage, which was a tenet of the faith for several decades in the mid to late 19th century. To expand on his concept, he alternates the first person account of Ann Eliza Young, who was in fact the "19th Wife" of Mormon "Prophet" Brigham Young, with a murder mystery that involves a young gay man, Jordan Scott, whose mother is accused of killing his father. The Scotts are part of a 21st century split off sect of Mormonism that still practices polygamy. Ebershoff writes in an engaging way, beautifully capturing the voices of his various protagonists. His story is based on thorough research, and while it is definitely fiction, it has the pure ring of truth.

I dislike books that are purported to be fictional yet quote many accounts that are factual. The further I got into this book the more blurred those lines became. Although I'm not a great defender of the Mormon faith, having left the church many years ago, this book certainly concentrates on the more salacious aspects of that religion. I didn't enjoy reading it.

I was very interested in the subject of plural marriages and the mysterious Mormon religion. I found much to answer my many questions within this novel. I would've given this book 5 stars but I feel there was a lot of excess verbiage. I found my attention straying through some of the chapters. I continued because my basic interest was still with me but there were times I felt bogged down in too much description. Basically I consider this a fine read and perhaps others with a different type of mind will appreciate the depth of description more than I did.

This a very interesting and informative book about the Mormons and the early formation of this religion group. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to know a little more about polygamy and how it worked or didn't work and why the Mormon church decided to abandon this practice.

I'm impressed with the ambitions of The 19th Wife, taking on a complex, controversial subject in two parallel stories...a multi-generational historical novel and a modern murder mystery. The historical sections are approached in a way not commonly seen in works of fiction, using various narrative styles from newspaper articles, to personal journals, to research papers, and legal depositions. David Ebershoff successfully shifts between his characters' unique voices, gripping the reader's interest with two equally compelling story threads. My biggest complaints are that the book drags on too long, and the ending of the contemporary plot line feels anti-climactic. Despite these issues, the 19th Wife is mostly well-written and well-researched. I will keep an eye out for other books by this author.
