I purchased this without first sampling it (since that option was not available on the date of this review); I was, therefore, fully prepared to request a refund if it wasn't all I had hoped it would be. But now that I've downloaded it and examined it, no such refund will be necessary; I am fully satisfied with it.At 273,857 Kindle location numbers, this is a large ebook. The active main TOC lists all the authors represented; tap on one of them and an active TOC lists that author's included works (no novels, just short stories). It also briefly tells something about that author and his/her stories, including their dates (though full and complete bibliographic information is not provided). Formatting is quite handsome with paragraphs being distinguished by traditional indention rather than spacing. Though it is easy to locate stories if you know their author, a separate A-Z title/index would have been useful.Content-wise, the stories are essentially old, public domain standards; some of them have been heavily anthologized prior to this collection, but quite a few are less common -- and I eagerly look forward to reading those "new" to me as well as re-reading the others. Of course, in style (as well as content) these stories definitely reflect their age, by which I mean they are masterfully crafted by talented wordsmiths of yesteryear to evoke a sense of horror and dread that is often more subtle than some modern readers (unaccustomed to such descriptive, slower-paced fare) might wish. That's not to say they are all great or equally good, but more than a few ARE outstanding "classics" of the genre.If you particularly like old-fashioned horror (as I do), you'll greatly enjoy this huge collection of it. If you're not sure, give it a try, anyway. If you decide WITHIN 7 DAYS that it's not to your liking, telephone Amazon Customer Service at 1-866-321-8851 to "return" it for a full refund. (But I'm willing to bet you'll probably decide to keep it.)

Incredibly pleased with this book. Despite literally hundreds and hundreds of stories there were still many I had not come across before, and the dull or overlong ones were quite rare. The ones I had already read were of a high enough quality to merit re-reading. Overall impossible to go wrong if you are a fan of late Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories.A warning is in order though. These are not all ghost or horror stories. In several cases other types of stories by an author who worked in the scary genre are included. I found these enjoyable and in a collection of this size not disappointing the way it might be to find them in an anthology of 10-20 ghost stories.It is really impossible to go wrong with this book. It’s very size and scope eliminates the possibility of a sequel though I wish there could be one.

In general I am satisfied with the selections, which vary in quality from excellent to unbearably dull. You will find it easy to skip what you find unbearable, and you can hardly complain after paying less than $2 for the Kindle edition. I am writing a review only to point out an oddity and to ask if anyone else has noticed it.In the story "The Thing in the Forest" by Bernard Capes, a peasant woman had pity on a werewolf and threw it a bit of meat one night. Later, convinced she had sinned, she entered a church to confess and noticed a statue of the Blessed Virgin. The story continues with this odd paragraph (location 50728 of 273857):"'Mother, forgive, and save me,' she whispered, as she passed the statue. Now for a break from the story. Where do you think that this came from? Another site, that's where. Sorry if you find this annoying, but you might want to find a site that does the work instead of stealing someone else's work."I can only guess how this got into the collection and past the eyes of the editors, if there were editors.

Purchased this book because I love horror and this just seemed to good to be true. I made it through two authors and had to move on to another book. I was so incredibly bored I couldn't stay awake while reading this. The rest of the authors may be wonderful but the first stories make me not want to read this book due to conditioning already set in. May find the energy to continue some day, as of now...waste of money.

A wonderful book that covers early horror and weird fiction by virtually every big name author of the time. Hours and hours of reading pleasure! The language and style may frustrate some readers.

At one thousand stories, this has to be the largest ghost-story anthology yet. They're all from the Golden Age, i.e. before 1920, and some have appeared many times in anthologies -- but most have not. My only complaint is that when I've finished this book, there won't be any new stories to read -- I refuse to countenance Stephen King and his ilk.

But many are real gems, though a few clunkers there, too. Very interesting to real the short bios of some authors have never heard of, though am aficionada of ghost/horror stories since childhood. Also like very much the works of the “serious” authors who are dotted throughout the book. Well worth the price.

The Crowley stuff makes this worth buying. THE TESTAMENT OF MAGDALEN BLAIR is one the the most intense short stories I've ever read, Get this.
