When I started this book I didn’t much like him, but then a review isn’t about whether you like the characters, but how well written a book is. And, this book is very well done. Plus, it didn’t take me too long into the book before I warmed up to him. I admired his dedication to his daughter, his honesty with his feelings no matter how shocking they may be, and I felt deeply for what he went through dealing with a child that seriously mentally ill. It is not easy by any means. I thought I had it very rough dealing with my daughter, but that was pale compared to his and his wife’s situation.One thing I’d like to add… the book was VERY different than what has been shown on tv about this case. On tv things seem really played down compared to this fathers raw account in this book.

What a great great read! I got through it so fast and was so interested in the story that I did some online research after about the author and January. Amazing book.Side note: there are a few parts that will be hard to read if you are a dog lover.

Yawn. This guy comes off like he is the only one who cares about his kid. He's just the one kicking himself. Sad story,

I bought this book after reading Michael Schofield's Huffington Post article, if only because I wanted to somehow support him financially for all of his troubles.It was not an easy book to get through -- be warned, it is dark, filled with negativity, and even distressing. (I ate a lot of chocolate while reading it.) But you might have expected that anyway: after all, the book focuses on a six-year-old girl who has a severe case of child-onset schizophrenia, and has not been noted by Publisher's Weekly for its optimistic outlook. If you're interested in the mental health of children and how our culture treats those afflicted with schizophrenia, I would definitely recommend it -- but be warned that it's not something that will leave you feeling hopeful and fulfilled.

Perfect insight into life as a family with mental illness. Having bipolar disorder myself I related so much to this family. And as a parent my heart goes out to them. It’s taught me so much compassion and to live by every therapist words “live moment by moment and day by day”

Very captivating, well written. I can not imagine having the kind of patience January's parents had!!

I haven't read anything like this. What this family lives through on a daily basis is amazing. I read this book in one day. I couldn't stop. I'm in awe of the honesty this father put down on paper. Glad he shared his story. This is a must read.
