About the Author

Ed Darack has covered America’s modern wars as both a writer and a photographer for over a decade. He’s embedded with combat troops a total of six times―twice in Iraq and four times in Afghanistan. He’s also embedded dozens of times with the U.S. military during training exercises, both at home and overseas. Darack has independently produced a tremendous volume of military themed imagery used on the covers and interiors of books, newspapers, magazines, and via online venues across the globe. This includes covers of Newsweek, Time magazine special edition, the cover of a #2 New York Times bestseller on Pat Tillman, the cover of Germany’s Stern magazine, two covers of Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine, the covers of a host of military themed books, The New York Times, and Vanity Fair, among many other venues. He’s the author of a number of books on modern military topics, including Victory Point (Penguin, 2009), and The Final Mission of Extortion 17 (Smithsonian Books, 2017). Darack is a contributing editor to Smithsonian’s Air & Space magazine, where he writes frequently about military aviation topics. Other military writing credits of his include Foreign Policy, The Marine Corps Gazette, Proceedings of the U.S. Naval Institute, and Leatherneck magazine.

As a Mom of one of the Marines deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq, I anxiously awaited this book. War Moments was extremely hard to put down! I cried, got chills and got transported back 13-14 years ago. Seeing now a lot of what these Marines lived through these deployments is amazing! Ed’s photos and stories are incredible and the story behind each one makes each photo even more real!! Seeing the photo of the US post office flat rate boxes brought back memories of our support group, MOMS (Mother’s of Military Servicemen). Buying, getting goodies and necessities donated and forming assembly lines to pack box after box after box to ship out! We’d send boxes for Mario to share with all the guys....15-20 boxes at a time. That part of my life has made me a stronger person....having a son at war......well nothing else compares!! All these memories just flowed as I read through the book. I met some of the Marines in these photos and recognized many of the names....all Heroes! My love to the families of the many who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you Ed for this wonderful book. I knew of Ed only through SOFREP (now NEWSREP), his interview and the promotion of the book. Being somewhat of a photo-nerd and vet of OEF I picked this book up - without going into a long subjective diatribe, the shots in the collection are artistically composed, but of real moments, that those that have been downrange in the last 15+ years would know. There is a longer description/caption of each shot that has enough detail that military buffs will pick up a few new things but written basic enough that my kids can read through it (so it's great for Marines too) - each shot also details the gear/shot composure - very cool.

Ed is awesome! He embedded with my unit and was great to work with... he has taken it further by honoring the legacy of the missions and people who served within them through this book.
