About the Author

Mark Burford is Associate Professor of Music at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where he is also chair of the American Studies program. His research and teaching focuses on twentieth-century popular music in the United States, with particular focus on African American music after World War II, and late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Austro-German concert music.

I am an avid fan of this tremendous artist. In 1990, I bought " The Great Gospel Women volumes. 1 and 2 " which highlighted the early superb work of Mahalia Jackson on Shanache Records. It was produced by Anthony Heilbut. I thought I would hear some dull, boring and uninspired singing. I was presently surprised. I heard music that captivated my ears and soul.Now for Mahalia Jackson... I thank Mr. Burford for opening the flood gates of her earlier career and the significance to the African American venacular in the early years of the 20th century. She embodies on two significant levels: First, God's continued promises for those who seek to be willing vessels in the service of the divine creative encounter and secondly, for creating a space in America for Black self expression in a religious/sacred context. Mahalia Jackson showed Black people and in particular (specifically Black women) that faith in self, faith in God and a determined spirit to live one's life on one's own terms can be achieved regardless of any hindrances that springs up in life such as sexism, racism etc...She opened up an unprecedented avenue and a creative path to express her faith about God that produced a new energizing spirit for marginalized people.Burford tells of Mahalia's early years from New Orleans to Chicago and the seeds that were firmly implanted in her that made her the premier Gospel Singer on wax!!!!I wish Mr. Burford would have had more space to talk about the early years of Gospel Music or the"Gospel Blues" movement that flooded into the northern city churches in Chicago. There was a belief of many Blacks (aka the talented tenth) in the thirties that if Black people took on the attributes and mores of the "majority society" they would be accepted as equals.The southern black person that began to migrate north did not think this way. They wanted to create "a space to be oneself" along with the economic freedom to have a space. With this conflict in ideology and socialogical thrust, the 1930s church setting viewed these opposing forces in the form of church service music performance of which Mahalia Jackson was a prime target. TA Dorsey, Theodore Frye, Magnolia Lewis Butts and Sallie Martin came together and cemented a creative compromise that produced Mahalia Jackson and many, many other great Gospel artists.What was produced was a fusion of Western Musicial idioms with the sacred passion of African American authentic expression that has yet to be surppassed even into the 21 century... (Think of Paverotti mixed with Bessie Smith).Mahalia Jackson came and enjoyed the following: national/international acclaim on Apollo Records, a national radio show, unheard of for a Black Woman which catapulted her to Columbia Records!!! While keeping her feet firmly planted with Black people and the admiration of the world.As I said, Burford has opened the door for more research because this music even today inspires and thrills the spirit of listeners. Mahalia Jackson needs further study also because she was the "Marcus Garvey" of the genre known as Gospel Music and achieved so much acclaim by being herself. She must be studied on many levels....You will have a thrill reading this book.
